Question

Hiya how's everybody doing hope your keeping well and your pride and joys.

We're in a bit of a pickle at the moment with my dad's 300c diesel his pride and joy.

Over the past year my old man's been having a starting issues with his motor as the months have gone by it's getting worse and worse till a few days ago it will turn but not start at all

Before all this it would take a lot of effort to get it going cold starting wise but once it did when the engine was warm it much easier too fire again after at least a day without use it would be a pig to start again.

Parts replaced battery

Crankshaft sensor

Fuel filter

Non return valve

Glow plug module

I would really like too get this car running again for my dad he loves this car and he doesn't want too give up on her I can't blame him it's a damn good machine next too my ford escort estate the 300c is like a battle ship next too it lol.

Any help and advise would be greatly appreciated.

Forgot too note also did Clean and wire brushed all the contacts on the battery and connections just to be sure that it's creating a proper contact just to make sure it's nothing simple.

Sorry to hear about the missus mate. You defo can't be selling her 300 now.

Mine is a 2008 black SRT Design with 20 inch alloys and blacked out windows. Thinking of buying some 22s for it.

It also has all the bells and whistles, black leather interior etc. I had to replace the MyGig when I bought a new battery for the car. It didn't like being disconnected from its life source for 30 seconds. When I turned on the ignition I had a load of warning lights on the dash and the MyGig went kapput. Cost me 40 quid to reset all the lights and 600 quid for a new Sony stereo! A new MyGig was £2,400 from Chrysler. Damn that battery.

I've had beemers, Jags, Daimlers... all better build quality, but none look as good or turn heads like the 300. I even drove a bride to her wedding in it last September. Trust me though, she was more of a head turner than the 300.

Very nice too and kept well. Just had a reply from GSF offering this one as the unit that fits? Was yours a thread or a push on? Hope you can see the picture. Thanks again for the replies.

That's not right... it's a push on. Exactly like the pics I attached yesterday.

No worries, I'll go onto the bay and order same as your picture. Once again thanks for your efforts and hopefully the heavier duty drop links will sort the knock for you. As I said, I upped the anti-roll bar to a 33mm and used poly bushes but that has no effect on the knock, just handles way tighter and combined with the rear mods, tyres and suspension, its way less tail happy under heavy acceleration and damp conditions. Be lucky and catch you out on the open road one day ! Steel Blue Pearl with mesh grill.

New Moog drop links were ordered last night, awaiting delivery. I put Moog polyurethane bushes on the anti roll bar last summer.

Hope you get your beast sorted. Everything can be fixed, it just takes time and money.

Stay safe mate.

Let me know how it goes. As I said, without access to the old fashioned ramp with shaker plates I would never have tracked the issue down. The faulty one was on the passenger side and when under pressure, on a standard hoist, everything was tight so the pry bar was useless as all bushes appeared good with no movement. These new lifts may save space but they don't meet all of the needs and so stuff slips through the net. I had stripped the entire front suspension out and replaced everything that looked iffy and as I told you had drilled, taped and die'd, fitted grease nipples replaced rubber for poly and still that knock persisted. Now had three years or so with no knocks of any kind. I have to offer a word of caution regarding fitting 22 inch rims, you may introduce further knock problems! Not confident that the off the shelf parts fitted to the car are up to the extra weight involved ! Be lucky..

What was the outcome of replacing the ECT?

Did it cure your starting problem?

I'm going through a similar dilemma, too. Glow plugs and module replaced after throwing up fault codes.

But a few weeks later, it came back. No codes whatsoever, even from AA patrolman attendance!

In specialist garage at mo, fuel pump appears good. But mechanic is scratching his head!

Hiya

ECT made no difference at all. Spent a little time and took the Glow Plug Module off and tried it on another vehicle! No issues with it on the other vehicle so could discount that as a possible fault. Moved on to glow plugs and it appeared, from the read out on the scanner, that one or two of the glow plugs were breaking down. Spent weeks soaking, heating, the two offending plugs but they refused to budge, easily! I don't have the facilities to remove the heads and do the work if the were to break and none of my engineering contacts were interested in attempting the removal so they have stayed where they are. They should be changed every 40,000 miles but even the dealerships didn't like messing with them because of the possibility of snapping them at the base. Solution ! Well in my case I only get the starting issue during cold weather so I use a heat gun on the two offending Glow Plugs and it starts each and every time and I only ever get the problem on the first start of the day. Never had any coded or warning lights come up and the car runs perfectly and flawlessly at all other times. Sorry I can't offer a better solution but if you figure it out or find someone who is able to get the offending plugs out then please get back to me and let me know. Good luck.

Glow plugs is the way to go I think!

Cheap as chips!

Baffled by no fault codes, though!

Spoke to a guy who owned one as a taxi (brave/stoopid/deep-pocketed fella) and he reckons it could be melting fuses on the relay or fuse box front left of engine bay.

Also, the big engine breather pipe which looks like an elephant ear can get clogged up and choke engine and cause back pressure.

Well as you know I’ve been at these things for many a year, I regret, deeply, getting rid of the 300M though on a mile for mile cost level it never ever cost me as much as this 300C but they get under your skin and you just can’t let them go, well I can’t and this 300c was the meme sahib’s so I’m seriously attached. Those pesky glow plugs ain’t cheap and they are the nasty thin ones so if they snap they are an absolute nightmare to try and get out in situ. Other than that I still like them despite all their flaws but then tell me a motor that hasn’t got flaws! Happy driving brother.

Aye, they're addictive.

Bought my one, a 2010 CRD Touring, 11 years ago.

Thought about replacing it with a newer car a couple of times, but nowt compares to the stunning looks, size and comfort of the 300C.

Hopefully have the problem of starting diagnosed by this weekend. I'll let.you know how I get on.

Tell me about it, bought the first Hemi as soon as they came on sale, my wife looked at me as if I were mad and I looked back at her as if I was, but you know, within a couple of months she wanted the 300c I kept the Hemi from 2006 to just a few months ago and it was used as a daily driver throughout all those years with never a missed beat, yes trim broke, yes I was constantly replacing rotors and bushes but each time I did they got replaced with quality aftermarket parts made of silicone etc and never a problem afterwards. The 300c LX is nearly 19 years old and MyGig still working most of the time, satnav same, switches all good as are lecky windows, still returns 36mpg regularly around the country lanes and sometimes 40mpg on a motorway if you drive like a very old man but it still looks pretty good and is only just beginning to feel a little sloppy at high speeds. Can’t find anything out there I would swap it for and I have spent a lot of time looking, certainly not an EV, did buy a Lincoln Navigator but the 4x4 running gear was utter rubbish. No I’ll be keeping the old girl and very likely get buried in her:rolleyes: Take care my man.

It was faulty glow plugs causing the starting problem, despite no fault codes coming up!

Car starting fine now.

Now, to get that annoying squeaking from rear end sorted!

Emptied God knows how many tins of lubricant on all visible bolts, bushes, etc, on rear control arms and suspension, but to no avail! MoT tester wasn't concerned with squeaking in March. Been like this since getting caught out on flooded road at end of December.

Any ideas?

Told you it would be the plugs. Where did you get the glow plugs done ? All the mechanics near me don’t want anything to do with them! I’m prepared to travel. How many were faulty?
As for the squeak<_< could be any number of things, don’t know of any specific causes but if you have replaced all the rear end bushes with new rubber you would think you’d not be getting any squeaks. If however you replaced with silicone bushes any number of squeaks are probable. Glad you got the plugs done, wish I could get mine sorted.
