As no one has said anything else, I'll offer these few words of advice................

When my handbrake shoes needed replacing (worn out by a previous owner, as I only ever leave it in 'P'), I immediately thought OK I'll do it. I bought new shoes, clips etc and took the wheel off to discover trying to work inside the hub was nigh on impossible. So conceding defeat I took it to a local place that does my MoTs but also specialises campervans, and got them to do it for me. Apparently it was a complete bitch of a job, and they had to take the rear hubs off to gain access, which even then was difficult.

Therefore, I can't advise on the socket size, but if you need it undone because of doing the handbrake, then you might want to think about letting a garage do it to save you heartache, and your fingers  .

I've never took the hubs off in the 8 years I've had the car. Replaced shoes two times. My old 69 year old fingers don't want to work anymore. Shoes are needing done again for MOT as it wouldn't pass, cos handbrake doesn't work..

Never really found it a problem when replacing the shoes, bit fiddly though. It's the way I build everything up before placing that helps..Did I mention I've a standin Panda, £20 road tax to cover car, as I take that bloody long to repair things.

18mm mate...I did this job a while ago. I had loads of 18mm sockets but space is severely restricted around the back of the rear hub.

I ended up buying another socket set which did the job....Draper from toolstation..product number 26034 for info. Use plenty of wd40 (or better) ahead of the job

Thanks for everyone's help on this I did it after a bit of head scratching the hardest part was the bottom 2 bolts on the bearing assembly as mentioned ,ant ratchet I couldn't get on then I realised if I remove the 2 bolts for the leaf suspension that were in the way ,and then put them back when I'm done which worked but found everything seized and rusted backplate s fell apart cos of rust so had to replace them and replaced the bearing cos they were seized on the backplate s but all done and got a decent handbrake lol oh and 1 caliper seized as well lol thanks again for everyone's help
