2006 2.8 Crd Diesel Lift Pump In The Fuel Tank?

Hi to all,

 

The stalling story continues.

 

I have replaced the filter housing and the car was golden for about 3 weeks but while we were in Wales the engine started cutting in and out and finally out. The RAC brought us back on the back of one their trucks and the car is now at our local (good) mechanic.

 

The RAC says it is the high pressure pump that has gone and we are looking at a sourcing a refurb which is all fine. However before the engine is worked on to get to the pump I had a question from him. He has has conflicting information about whether their is a lift pump in the tank, we want to check it if there is one,  and rather than taking the tank out to look does anyone here know. He is flat out busy and it would save time to know.

 

It is a stow and go 2006 2.8 CRD and it would be a great help to be pointed in the right direction.

Hi,

 

The vehicle does have a lift pump.

 

However when I had my 2.5CRD the lift pump didn't operate and I never had any problem starting or running.

 

I haven't tested on my 2.8CRD whether it runs without a lift pump but I'm happy to try if you want to rule that out.

Have you checked the pressure release valve on the fuel rail ???

Had same problem if cutting out while driving!!

Treble check on that fault diagnosis - I don't recall of ever reading of a high pressure pump failure on here, I could of course be wrong.

-  agree with bignev, LP never HP

- only ever came across one ever 2.8 CRD [Andy2000] where LP pump was in tank

- - see pic of primer its central twixt RAD & engine block

- - if it takes more than one or two depressions to 'hard' its leaking pressure

- - look at LP side / leakback / rail pressure / spin-on filter slack / ) ring / etc

 

The HP side does all the work on the 2.8 and remains constantly pressurised, doesn't need a lift pump.

My Renault Master van works in the same way, primer (rubber bulb in my case) just before the filter, with a non return valve built in. And no pump in the tank.

 

When it went tits up a couple of months ago I recalled all I had read on here, and with the aid of a glamorous assistant, (he isn't really!) turning the engine over with me pumping the bulb it started, and stayed running while it was pulling fuel through. After turning it off and leaving for a few minutes it wouldn't start again. New primer bulb and it's been good since.
