2.8 Grand Voyager Diesel Auto Temperature Rise

Question

Hello,

 

I have posted about this on the newbie section but since then there has been an attempt to solve it. Alas the problem is still there.

 

Temp gauge rises when going up hill. Usually round town temp gauge is fairly stable. On uphill motorway sections the needle starts to go up. Put the heater on and it comes down. I have put rad flush in and drained and refilled. The problem is still there. Only about 7-8 litres came out when it was drained and the manual says 13.8 litre coolant capacity?? Can anyone suggest what’s happening? My next move is maybe new radiator.

I did it [lazy] old school :


 


- hose in header tank


- 1/2 pulled off bottom hose


- start engine


- matched out [of bottom hose] to in [at header tank] flow


- started the car to fully flush with heater matrix full open


- switched the car engine off


- let it run till it was totally clear


 


Only ever 05 Hoat £25


 


You will see the return water from the whole cycle come squirting into the translucent header tank from its internal entry. There was loads of gunge. I used the x5L of GO-5 and the x5L of distilled for a quid, it may have been a pint or so short but that's still well protected, Cars give you what you give them and we will agree this stuff is hardly ever done properly regardless of who we pay - do it yourself and you know its right. Have a quick check of the level the next morning and look under the car for damp patch. Hope its not you RAD, Best of luck.

Only ever Hoat.

I'm religiously whole life DIY. My responsibilities, my lifeline, I'll do it 100% right or I won't start till I can. I was embarrassed to see more debris than my dustbin. Garages/others use the same cheepo carp for every car that they do.

Well I have tried flushing the rad and replacing the coolant and I still get overheating going up hills and sustained motorway driving. This can be mitigated by putting the heater on full and opening the windows so I don’t cook. I’m contemplating getting a new radiator but don’t want to spend that kind of cash if it’s not the issue. Anyone have any ideas please?

My suggestion would be a new radiator from ebay, £60 to £75 at a very quick look just now. 

 

It's not a horrendous job to swap the rad out.

 

If using the cabin heater brings the temperature down then I reckon the evidence says the water pump is doing its job.

I know this isn't hugely helpful but I have the same issue and having worried about it for a long time I was eventually told it is actually in the manual for the car. 

 

A quick check (sorry not sure the page number) and yes it actually says the car temp gauge will go up and then come back down.  It has the helpful tip of pulling over and stopping if it reaches the red until it cools down enough. 

 

Having worried about this on my own and tried heater trick etc... I stopped doing anything about it and after 2 years its never overheated into the red. Its got close but then something has kicked in i think and brought it back down to a reasonable level. 

 

The only thing I did do was add WaterWetter additive which lowers the overall temp slightly ( maybe 5 degrees) . its on amazon. 

 

Its not a fix but it does take the stress away!

Hi, 

 

Have you found the radiator change completely resolved the temp? 

 

I'm wondering if i should replace mine soon for a new one.

 

Because its never actually gone to red i've got use to it but a new rad might be worth doing whilst im trying to fix other cooling related issues.

Well, temerature rising is natural when cooling is not sufficient, as simple as that!

Had the same problem. Now solved?

1. Install a new radiator (it will eventually start leaking anyway on these models)

2. Replace the thermostate.

 

This is quite å job so why not replace timing belt and waterpump when at it?

 

I did this in two days in my garage - diy guy as i am.

Car turned out good as new and temperature never rises even when pulling a heavy trailer.

 

Flushing won't clear the radiator.

After this job i guess i'll keep the car a couple more years....thousands of dollars saved.

It's a 2005 GV, 2,8 crd, 230.000 km
