Stiff Clutch Pedal

Question

My Delta 1.6 JTDM has always had a pretty stiff clutch and fairly notchy gearbox especially when cold. Recently it feels heavier than ever and I was wondering if there's anything I can do with the pedal box to try to lighten the pedal a bit. I'm starting to get an aching left foot and ankle after driving in traffic. Are all deltas like this? Can the return spring in the pedal mechanism be swapped out for something a bit lighter? Also wondered if I could swap clutch pedal box for an Alfa one? Anyone done this?

I've had my 1.6jtdm SR for almost 4 years now and the clutch is pretty light, and was exactly the same on my wife's 1.6jtm2 Mito. The clutches are self adjusting, so usually no intervention is required.

 

Where does yours bite? Is it almost at the top of the pedal or about half way where it should be? If at the top it's on it's way out...

 

I'd be surprised if it was an issue caused by the pedal box, and I've never heard of anyone swapping them out?

 

Now if you owned an Alfa GT 1.9 or even a 156 sport then I'd sympathise with you as they are all notoriously heavy with little long term cures available.

Thanks for the reply. The biting point id bang in the middle and there's no slipping from the clutch. There just seems to be too much resistance in the pedal but I can't work out if it's the spring, the slave cylinder or whether they're all like that. It's been like it for years. It's the only niggle I have with the car. Was hoping it might loosen up a bit with age but if anything after 80k miles it's getting worse.

It's 1 of 3 things, a master cylinder, a clutch slave cylinder or the pressure plate spring has hardened due to overheating or slippage. The master cylinder is about an hour and a half to do, the slave cylinder is concentric and requires the gearbox out, at which point the clutch itself can be examined
