Rear Sill Rusting - Suggestions?

Hi all,

 

This is one of the jobs I've got this summer, so I'm open to suggestions on best cure/solution. My current thinking is plastic/masking tape around affected area, gently sand to cleanup and remove debris, use that rust-converter stuff (HAMMERITE KURUST 90ML - Rust Treatment /Killer) to convert/revert it to something solid, give it an undercoat/protector (CarPlan Tetroseal Underbody Underseal Sealant?) and then paint over the top (rattle cans?)

 

Anyone any comments on the above plan, or can tell me I'm talking rubbish and tell me the best solution!

Is there any holes thou...Yes scrub all rust off and get the killer on. Red lead, paint and underbody goo...Ideal if you can get inside and spray a mix of oil/grease to stop progress of rust...

Just done the front of both sills behind the front mudflaps, had to cut away completely and weld in plates, fill and done the whole underside with stone chip to stop getting worse.

But id recommend it as i kniw its sorred once and for all

Hi Seen this before on  a voyager this one rusted from the inside to the outside I'm going drill some holes on the top off the sills and pump in lots of gear oil.  Make sure you put plenty of cardboard and trays underneath to catch oil.

Just had my rear offside sill done at the garage, about 300-400mm sill replaced from wheel well. Around £100. They mentioned that rest of sills need a bit corrosion protection on underside. Still to do that...Would like to get inside and spray oil grease mix but what with.

i would cut away the rust and weld plates on, that there is an MOT fail waiting to happen (suspension mounting points are very close). i know that for a fact as i have just (last week) done mine for that very reason.

Regarding the fail point on mine, the hole in cill is directly below the seatbelt anchor point.

Hi Andy

All seems pretty good as per above suggestions. I would like to add, personally, I would avoid the rattle spray cans and go for Hammerite Smooth, or similar, paint on with a brush. My thinking is this: You can get a thicker coat on (So it should offer better protection) Down there on a cill and with the colour black you can "get away with it a bit" It's not like hand painting the bonnet. Re Hammerite either buy the special thinners to clean the brush or option 2 buy cheap brush and discard. .If things are the same as years ago DON'T do a second coat . Hammerite reacts badly to this.
