Oil Pressure Warning Light Been On For 10,000 Miles

HI. While driving a long distance the oil pressure light came on. I had the sensor and oil pump replaced. But it made no difference. I've covered 10,000 miles since, fast motorway and slow city traffic. My question is, would the engine be toast by now if it had a low oil pressure problem? Thanks for any reply. Ant..

Hi, if the new sensor is ok, it could be the wiring to it.

If you have the right amount of oil in, it shouldn't be a problem, it will come up as an advisory at the mot.

Depending on the model you have, the filter is related to the pressure, in my case was enough to replace the sensor but I heard that the filter was playing funny and was solved by replacing the washers.

Hi.thanks for the reply. When you say filter do you mean oil filter? Also forgot to mention it's a 07 2.8 diesel. The light comes on after about 20 minutes of driving and when the weather is cold it takes longer to come on.

Could you do the key dance and post here what error codes you have if any....related to oil should be P0520 up to P0524.

Or does it have too low a viscosity oil in there, if it's ok on start up till the oil thins and the perceived pressure drops. Had it on an Impreza quite a few years ago, not quite the same as the oil pressure light would come on when starting hot and take a while to go out, soon swapped it back to Mobil 1!

Hi.I've had a thicker oil change hoping it would work but it hasn't. Key dance code is p0520. It's all pointing to low pressure but like I said I've done 10,000 miles and the engine has no knocks of strange noises. Still pulls strong and starts up first time every time. Cheers. .

Also bignev's answer could apply. I was looking on the autodata fault finding, it can be oil grade and/or bearings, but with bearings I guess you will loose oil, by the way is the oil on level?

You said you had the oil pump replaced, did that include the oil?! I will assume so...otherwise go for an oil and filter replacement.

Hi, the P0520 code is explained as per bellow:

Engine oil pressure sensor/switch-circuit malfunction 

the suggested fix is: wiring, engine oil pressure sensor/switch, ECM

 

the test is to be done as follow

pin 1&3, state of the sensor disconnected, state of the engine ignition on, value of 5 volts (checking voltage supply)

pin 2&3, connected, ignition on,  0.5 volts (checking signal)

pin 2&3, connected, engine at idle, 2.2 volts (checking signal).

 

If the above test turns out positive, before inspecting the ECM, I would inspect the sensor again, a good way is on the link attached.

Just had the same trouble when the engine is hot the oil light would come on. It turned out to be one of to things I put on a good top quality oil filter and a new oil sensor and It's been all good since so I think it going to be buy the best and you should be ok all so put in some of that ZX1 Lub and it goes and lot better so it seems to work well.

I have had the oil light come on when I am towing my caravan. It comes on after several miles especially on hot days, and then goes out again???

Never comes on when not towing.

Any suggestions chaps please?

I think it might be worth putting on a oil pressure gauge then you will know for sure if there is a problem mine is a 07 2.8 crd the oil light come back on again off again a lot off the time but the engine is fine no codes it's looking like 2007 thing wiring  problem will let you know then I have sorted it out by the way make sure you get the right sensor as there are two from 2007 on and 2002 up to 2007 one as a grey top and one as black top I put a grey in so getting a genuine black one to try and so it go's on Jeff

When did you change your air filter etc, when did you change your (correct grade/viscosity) engine oil, when did you change your gearbox oil ? Is your fully loaded trailer only 60% of the weight of your GV. What is your fully loaded weight of your GV. Did you check the pressure swich. Did you :

 

Upgrade radiator

Upgrade Engine oil cooler

Fit a heavy-duty transmission oil cooler

Well everybody finally sorted the oil pressurs out it was a new faulty oil switch put on oil gauge and a new switch  oil is running at 2 bays hot and 5 bar hot so it is all good. So now for led head lights trying some new ones out there called  slimline leds they gave the same pattern as the original but brighter and it goes on.
