Mechanic Hiss/whining Lifting Off Accelerator

HI All,

 

Just wondering if you can help. I have a 1.4 Petrol Delta and a high pitch mechanical hissing sound like a whine can be heard when lifting off the accelerator. It happens consistently regardless of driving along or being stationary or out of gear.

 

Searching around online it could be the alterator and the drive belt. Just wondered if anyone else has encountered this?

Hi Jos - you will hear a whoosh from the wastegate if its a 1.4 MA although not when stationary. I'd be very careful about driving it if its the belts catching on something althought you would hear that constantly and not just on lift-off. Whereabouts in the engine bay is it coming from - can you tell?

To be fair, the whoosh from the wastegate in the multiair is very discreet (more of a chirp)

Jos' problem sounds like a loose hoseclip or holed hose, possibly could be an air filter housing issue (they're a barsteward to do! )

Yes Andrew - mines more noticeable now with my new Turbo and the window down - Quite like that induction noise! And agreed about the Air Filter. Whoever thought it OK to have to really jack the car up to pop the Filter out?!

Thanks guys. I will take a look tonight and see if I can pinpoint where in the engine bay its coming from. Its definitely louder from the passenger side window.

 

Yes I noticed the whooshing from the westgate being a little louder these days and its quite nice.

 

I am due to get the cambelt and waterpump changed soon so I will my mech to do check if I cannot determine the cause before then. No notice in power loss but I will report back with my findings should it help others.
