Slow To Start In The Mornings

Hi, can anyone assist, we have a 2003 Chrysler voyager 2.5 crd, the car doesn't like starting on cold mornings, slow turning over. I've replaced the glow plugs and put a bigger better battery in it, it's turning over a lot faster, but still slow to start. Any suggestions?

Sounds like a starter issue. Check connections for tightness, check voltage at the battery and then check voltage on the pos lead at the starter connection and starter ground, they should be the same, any significant volts drop replace the leads.    Perform a current draw on the battery when turning the starter. Too much current draw, sort the starter.

Mine is the same and kicks out a crud load of exhaust but runs fine after

 

I've checked all of the above but still no joy. It starts on the first key turn though so I'm not too fussed at the moment

I find if I run the glow plugs twice before starting, it's a lot faster to start

If it takes time to start the engine, there is fuel build up and this will manifest in a small amount of "exhaust crud". Operating the glow plugs twice warms the engine more,thats fine but it points to a minor problem somewhere. Probably the glow plugs failing, or are you in an area of exceptionally low temperatures?

Glow plugs are on for 15-30 seconds, you see the warning light for 5 seconds but they are actually on for a lot longer. Check LP fuel line & filter.

Connect a volt meter to a glow plug, and when the light goes out you will see voltage for a bit longer.

Thank you, mate. I'll have a proper look this weekend. Not particularly low temperatures, between 0 and -5 this week
