2.5 Crd Thermostat - Sealed Unit Or Not?

Question

Hi everyone!

I'm certain that I need to replace the thermostat on my 2003 2.5 CRD Grand Voyager,

My workshop manual states that I need to replace the sealed unit (so that's what I'm expecting to do..)  I went to Andrew Page motor factors and they pulled up 2 options for a replacement.  One was a sealed unit thermostat for around £100 but the other was a 'naked' thermostat for about £12!!

Have they made a mistake, or is there an option for me to save £88?

As ever, all advice gratefully received :-)

Did it!!
Excellent video andyb2000 thanks!
I found out that the thermostat I bought was actually mis-labelled in the database and was for an earlier voyager variant.

I didn't fancy waiting for 2 weeks for delivery of the ebay thermostat that andy mentioned in his youtube notes so I did a little research on similar types.

I picked up a thermostat for a 1992 Renault Clio 1.1 Engine code C1E700. It was about £8.  It didn't have the same housing as the one Andy used, but the disc type.  I had do do a fair bit of filing to reduce the diameter.
It works a treat!

Thanks all for your help.

Andyb2000,

The model of thermostat that I picked up from Andrew Page motor factors was a QH brand with the designation QTH267K - just like this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/p/QTH267K-QH-Coolant-Thermostat-Kit-Rc493427p-OE-Quality/1233668625- but cheaper and it was on the shelf!  It was for a 1992 1.1 Renault Clio.

The rim has about 3 circles embossed in it.  I filed down to the ring just outside the 2 sets of riveting that secures the frame that holds the spring in place.  I did also drill a 2mm hole just on the outside edge of the frame that holds the wax pellet actuator - that was actually the hardest part of the whole procedure.

Spot on Argee, thanks for the extra info, always good to have a few options and tips for it. Actually I just realised the one you got was the one I ordered originally by mistake! So I had one sat in the garage. If anyone wants it I'll pop it in the post for them.

Berkswolf, info should be in the description of the video, but it was: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Thermostat-Renault-5-19-21-25-Clio-Espace-Twingo-Trafic-1-2-1-4-2-0-2-2-/291274512916?hash=item43d1505a14

and I believe the OEM part number was 7700727190.

I used a Part Number TH01489 from RockAuto UK - This slipped straight in to the internal pipe diameter, the rolled rim makes a smooth entry no filing or fettling other than the hole to drill. Additionally the 5 minutes install time on the 99p spent on cheepo grey plastic pip-lagging at Screwfix further halved the already reduced warm up time.

Most good UK 2.8's get around 33/34 MPG, many don't get anywhere near a consistent 33MPG. I'm not sure if I ever expected the mod to improve on my average 33+MPG - but I am sure most people will benefit from the 20%[ish] drop in MPG we would expect from the first 15 minutes of cold running when the weather drops to ≡ ≈ 5°C. My brother used to have a brand new Ford Galaxy MPV on a 2.2 that at £32k+ used to get take around 30 minutes to even be able to use the demister, and if he parked up to long waiting for her indoors coming out of the bingo the engine cooled so much he had to turn the fan blower off or his pins froze.

I'm saw a much reduced warm-up time [about 4 mins] and a noticeably mitigated diesel running costs over the next 5 UK weather months when I did the two mods below. This will very particularly applies to me [and any] infrequent user who travels only 15 miles in one go twice each week.

I also went solar maintainer that year and found that 2 years it worked and one year [lifestyle] it didn't. I'm currently looking at chucking my cheepo Maplins 4W panel and buying a better 10W panel & charge controller. The Maplins panel was always going to be on the extreme edge of useless when I bought it and I knew it at the time. The panel I'm now looking at should make more than a 1/2 A [1W] in the worst of the winter which is double the IOD mA loss 'at rest' on my 05.

Thanks guys. Not sure if my thermostat is stuck, I suspect not as my temp  gauge does get to around half way. it just takes a good while to get there in the colder weather. i shall do the simple mods and see how it goes.

Your stat is almost certainly OK. You need an air-dam, see above. Best of luck.

Agreed with QinteQ, if you EVER get to half way on the temperature gauge then it's not the thermostat failed open! So it's just the cold taking time to warm that beast of a cold engine block.

I copied QinteQ and did the air dam with the pipe lagging from DIY shops and it makes a nice difference so should help you out, even easier than the thermostat mod!

Exellent stuff thanks guys. I have already ordered a thermostat, only a fiver so not concerned, but I will start just doing the lagging mod. My previous car, a Peugot 407 2.0 tdi heated up in no time at all in the mornings. It had a system that directed the warm water to the heater before the thermostat allowed it to go to the radiator. The GV certainly suffers by comparison to that so perhaps I am just expecting too much from as you say a massive block to warm up.
